With the rapid development of Internet, the application of IP multicast is more andmore widely. It is found that most multicast applications are source-aware, in order toovercome the disadvantages of traditional Any Source Multicast(ASM) which can notidentify a multicast source. Source Specific Multicast(SSM) model was proposed. SSMuses the source address and the group address to compose a multicast distribution model.it do not send multicast packets just for a range of multicast gourp any longer. butprovide service to a data stream which binding a specific source and group.thereforemost multimedia applications are more convenient and efficient.This paper comes from the three phase of multicast project. it focuses on the studyof SSM, on the software platform of H3C, it implements SSM which based on IGMPv3and PIM-SSM. Main work is as follows:Firstly, the paper introduces the multicast concept and the basic technologiesrelated to multicast, and describes the differences and unicast、broadcast betweenmulticast. it detailedly introduces IGMPv3procotol, and compares IGMPv3withIGMPv1/2. Besides, it detailedly introduces the working principle and the mechanismof PIM-SSM procotol. and analyses the differences between PIM-SSM and PIM-SM.Secondly, It designs the multicast architecture, uses the method of modular andmulti-process design to divide multicast into sub modules and sub processes. the subprocesses realize the message interaction by socket. According to the PIM modulefunction, it focus on a detailed thread dividing of PIMD, Besides, it uses the method offunction dividing and structure design to divide PIM-SSM into sub modules, includingoperation design and design of data structures of SSM.Finally, By setting up the network testing environment on Simware, SSM has beentested and verified, The results show that SSM has been implemented by above-mentioned design.The three phase of multicast project has passed the testing department. therefore,the research of SSM has not only theoretical significance, but also has practicalengineering value and wide market prospect.
