Driving simulator is a kind of hi-tech apparatus which can simulate driving act accurately and make the driver feel like in a real car. It's very significant and valuable to develop a driving simulator suitable for the road conditions and traffic laws in our country.From theory to application, this thesis introduced the technologies in virtual reality, designed the system structure of the distributed driving simulator, and did a thorough research on the motion simulation and collision detect in virtual driving. The system was developed with the cross-platform open-source graphic engine OpenSceneGraph (OSG), therefore it had high graphic performance, low hardware requirement, and wonderful portability. Module independence was considered when designing the system structure, and extended interface was reserved, so the practicality and flexibility is remarkable. Aimed at the problems in existed motion simulation, this paper separated the camera from the vehicle, gave a uniform data structure of control input, and improved the vehicle dynamic model. In order to detect the collisions in virtual driving, this paper analyzed some regular algorithms and put forward a dynamic three-point detect terrain matching algorithm. To handle the collisions more precisely, this paper introduced and analyzed the physics engine OpenDynamicEngine (ODE), integrated it with graphic engine OSG, and got very good results.The technologies mentioned upon were applied successfully in the system development. Results show that the system has good real-time performance, is convenient to control, and makes user feel personal on the scene. It is very practical and set up a solid base for further development.
