Injection mold is widely used in industrial production because of its high efficiency, good production quality and low cost. In china, industry of injection mold is developing rapidly. The injection mold takes part of 1/3 in the whole production of plastic mold. With the development of plastic industry, plastic products increase continually in variety and quantity, and the new requirements to quality and style bring forward continuously. Simultaneously the requirements to injection mold are higher and higher, and make every effort to reduce design and production cycle. Traditional softwares of mold CAD depend on the experience and knowledge of designer and design efficiency and quality can't satisfy the requirements of mold.Intelligent and automation is a main development direction of mold design. This topic introduces expert system into mold design to develop injection mold CAD system based on Solidworks platform and using secondary developmen of VB. This paper concentrates on the fundamental research and software development of cooling system.Cooling system directly influences the quality and efficiency of product in injection mold design. Firstly, this article introduces injection mold's characteristic as well as the design process of traditional injection mold, then proposes the overall project of injection mold CAD system, finally aims in cooling system. Analyze the influence factor of cooling system, summarize the arrangement principle and commonly used cooling loop's type and determine the related parameters.This paper summarizes the cooling knowledge, unifies characteristic of mold design knowledge, and establishes cooling system knowledge base of injection mold using rule representation; introduces the expert system to decide the cooling loop's style by using resoning system to reason and analyze mold knowledge; realizes automatic design of cooling system by using automatic assembly technology and parametrization design.The entire design process completes automatically by the computer, does not need the mold designer's calculation, and raises the efficiency and quality greatly of mold design.Simultaneously this paper also carries on the design and the development of procedure course document, consummates the system automatic design function which need not the user confirm each step, and enhances system's efficiency.
