After Hirsch(2005) proposed h-index and used it to evaluate the individual's researches, h-index was attached to scholars' attentions. H-index can be calculated and operated easily so that it has been used by some universities and groups and may become a core evaluation indicator in future. For probing into h-index both theoretically and practically, the author has the CSSCI-based positive study on the h-index of scholars in humanities and social sciences.Methodologically, the author chooses six fields (Literature, Philosophy, History, Law, Economy, Library and Information and Documentation) in CSSCI, gets quotation data from 2002 to 2006, calculates both scholars' traditional bibliometric indicators (papers, citations and citations per paper) and their h-index, analyzes overall situation of each field and the traits of the top 100 scholars who are ranked by citations, and studies distributing traits of Humanities and Social Sciences scholars' h-indices and reasons, When the top 100 scholars in each field are ranked by both citation indicator, the relation between h-index and traditional bibliometric indicators is revealed. Analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of h-index comparing with traditional bibliometric indicators, and tests mathematical models of h-index at present. The main innovations in the dissertation include the systematical analysis and comparison of the scholars' h-indices from different subjects, h-index and citation indicator for scholars in humanities and social sciences based on CSSCI, and the verification for mathematical models of h-index by empirical data.
