| With the development of information technology, the Internet is making more and more far-reaching impact on exchanges of all disciplines, and the proportion of online articles will be higher in all of academic information. While the online articles and web citation theories have emerged for a short period of time, on which much research is intensely being done. Many scholars and researchers of English-language countries tried to conduct analysis on these formal or informal citations on websites, to find out the impact of the Internet on scholar research, and then attempted to construct a new index system of academic evaluation by citations on websites. However, online information is much more numerous and complicated than academic information. What's more, the features of publishing and citing articles in different disciplines have various amount of discrepancy, which makes the data of each discipline diverse. Therefore, it will take a long time for the discipline of web-citation research to improve and become mature, which eventually will be able to format a strict theory to make more theoretical and practical significance. For practical reasons, bibliographic databases can only contain a subset of the scientific literature.2These databases have preferences with or without intent on subjects, languages and types of literature. For instance, CiteSeer contains only literature on computer and information science, while arXiv.org gets 6 disciplines including Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Quantitative Biology, Quantitative Finance and Statistics. Even Web of Science including 5 databases of SCI, SSCI, A&HCI, CCR&IC and CPCI-S gets different number of journals and literature in difference disciplines (Chapter 4). Thus, it is necessary to learn the preferences to lead Web Citation Theory mature. In view of these above, this thesis did comparative analysis to data of web citations in different aspects such as disciplines and searching tools. After theories and research about Web-Citation introduced,4 web-citation search tools were compared on their features. Then articles in journals of 3 science disciplines of Physics, Chemistry and Computing were chosen as samples for empirical study. It compared the Google Scholar citations and WoS citations by year, disciplines and by types and languages of citing literature. After that, a model concept of Web Citation was introduced by literature research and empirical analysis. The thesis is consists of 6 chapters, which are structured as follows:Chapter 1, Introduction. In this chapter, the background, significance, content, purpose of this research adding methodology are elaborated, as well as the innovation.Chapter 2, Research on Web Citation. The concept and genre of web citation were given in the way of literature reviews. And then web-citation analysis research by both domestic and oversea scholars was reviewed.Chapter 3, A summarization of web-citation search tools. Features of 4 tools of Web of Science, Google Scholar, CiteSeer and Google were introduced, and compared by languages, range, quantity of literature they contains, and types of web citations. Then appropriate tools were chosen for this research.Chapter 4, A empirical analysis for Web Citation based on 3 science disciplines. We chose 5 highly impact journal for each discipline, got data of both 2010 and 2005 articles and citing literature from both WoS and Google Scholar, then analyzed it by year, disciplines, tools to get conclusions.Chapter 5, A conceptualization for developing trends of web citation research. In this part, an index of evaluation was advanced by means of empirical study, as well as new way of citation indexing by literature research. At last, a conceptualization model for evaluation system on web-citations was constructed.Chapter 6, Conclusion. Contribution of this thesis in the field of web citation analysis research was summarized, while limitation and lack were also pointed out. Future research directions were illustrated at the same time. |
