In recent years, digital video capture and coding and compression technology have made rapid development and gain wide application. And video signal capture and depression system has made great grogress toward highly integratation and intellectualization, which promoted the application of multimedia communication technology. The video compression and coding technology is the key module of multimedia system. H.264 standard is currently one of the most advanced compression and coding standards. Compared with previous standards such as H.263 and MPEG-4, H.264 video coding standard can achieve considerably higher coding efficiency. Due to the advanced compression performance and the "network-friendly" nature, H.264 will be the next generation of "industry-leading" video coding standard.However, the better capabilities of H.264 are at the expense of computational complexity. As a result, general purpose MPU cannot satisfy the requirement of the H.264 real-time application. DSP chips are becoming ubiquitous with faster speed and lower resource consumption. Due to its excellent parallel processing ability and signal processing capacity, the OMAP5912 of the TI Corporation is a perfect platform to run H.264 CODEC.This paper mainly researches on H.264 key technology of video coding and its implementation on TI OMAP5912.The evolution of video coding standard is introduced and comparision with the previous international video coding standards are made. And composition of the real-time DSP system and the choice of the right chip for our system are presented.Then the series of IT OMAP products, OMAP5912 development platform, the hardwares and characteristics of OMAP5912 are presented.And the structure of H.264 video coding sytem, such as the profiles, data structure and CODEC flow of H.264 are discussed. Besides, such core technologies of H.264 as intra prediction, inter prediction, transform and quantity are discussed. Furthermore, we briefly introduce three major testing modules of H.264 are briefly introduced.Then, the profile of the hardware compositon of our application system are presented and the extended chip OV7620 camera of OMAP5912 are fully introduced, including the working principle, hardware interface and drive design of OV7620.And after that, software realization of our application is given.This paper chooses X264 as its reference coding software and run it in PC. The key coding references are analysed and optimized to measure coding efficiency and video performace. Meanwhile, the implementation of OMAP5912 software platform system, the optimization of H.264 on OMAP5912 and the research fruit of the experiment are presented.Finally the work in this paperand is summarized.
