A Study Of Systematic Visual Design Of Cultural And Art Periodical

In recent years, the periodical publication industry expands rapidly in China, although it still faces the severe challenge from the so named'New Media'. In the era of excess media supply, how can the traditional paper periodical have vigorous vitalities and keep itself surviving in the fierce competition? Aiming at the issue mentioned above, this thesis devoted to explore, analyze and then demonstrate the systematic way of how to shape the brand image of periodical, represented by Cultural and Artistic periodical, and how to promote its competitiveness strength from the viewpoint of'Visual Design'.In the first part of this thesis, the author analyzes the dissemination characteristic of Cultural and Artistic periodical, and believes that this type of periodical disseminates information content and reading quality largely in dependence on visual pattern and information. Therefore, the research of visual design has the representativeness within the periodical publication, and will provide us a number of helpful conclusions and methods to design periodical in a systematic and visual way.Secondly, the author investigates the current situation of systematic visual design of periodical, and summarizes the existing problems in the systematic visual design. In order to solve these problems, the author proposes a new solution, constructing the'periodical visual design system'.'Visual design system of the Periodical'is a systematic way of visually designing the periodical, i.e. introducing the concept and the systematic design method of'Systemism'to periodical design, and regarding the visual design of the periodical as on segment of the whole chain of periodical publication. The periodical designer considers the visual design systematically and integrally throughout the whole designing process. Through the construction of the'visual design system of the periodical', the visual design of the periodical is no longer an isolated design which aims at single visual design element (brand font, cover, layout grid, etc.), but an integrated design which systematically establishes rational and ordered links between various visual elements in the periodical by different publishing idea and content, and which completes the reconstruction of the content and the included information. Since the periodical publishes periodically, the'Visual design system of the Periodical'is adjusted constantly throughout the timeline, thereby guiding the reading, promoting the reading quality and portraying brand image. Due to its dynamic property and openness, the dynamic system is compared to'the tree of system'. The tree grows through the alternation of sub-systems located in the vertical and horizontal direction. This thesis also explains in detail the construction level, construction pattern, and circulation process of the design system in the periodical publication process.Through the research of construction method and procedure, the author puts forward the conclusion and the method of'Periodical visual design system'. The application of the proposed solution will be greatly beneficial to the raise of reading quality, the shaping of the brand image and the promotion of the synthesized competitiveness strength.
