With the development and progress of computer technology, network technology, database technology and other related technologies, the traditional libraries are now accelerating to transit to digital libraries. Since the information service of science and technology periodicals is an important part of the digital libraries, it also changes with it profoundly and rapidly. This paper is focused onihe information service of science and technology periodical and its development trend within the network environment. Using the distributed object-oriented technology and integrated technology of multi data source, the author advances the vision of establishing the virtual, uniform and national platform for the information service of science and technology periodicals, and designs the functional requirement and system structure for the uniform service platform in detail.First, the paper describes the development, position, function and the current status of the information service of science and technology periodicals at home and abroad. Then, it analyses the current problem and gives some advice for the information service of science and technology periodicals. Following that, the author places emphasis on comparing several periodical information service systems with large scale and great impact in China and points out the necessity and urgency of setting up the virtual, uniform and national platform for the information service of science and technology periodicals. Based on the above facts, the paper dwells up on the theoretical and technological basis for the service platform and testifies the feasibility of constructing the platform with advanced network technology and database technology. At the end of the paper, the technology scenario and design are suggested for constructing the platform.
