As the growing variety of the network application, together with the request for QoS, available bandwidth measurement have attracted more and more attention, given the situation that the wireless application has been well developed and widely used in nowadays, we have to consider that whether those old network measurement methods and technologies based on wired network can still be adopted in wireless network. In this paper, the author took a deep analysis on the application of the probing-based available bandwidth measurement in IEEE802.11 wireless environment, with thorough experiments, whose result testifies the proposed theoretic model well; he managed to show that the analysis result appropriately explained the new characteristic of those measurement methods under wireless condition. Most of the current active end-to-end available bandwidth measurement is based on the inter-packet gap response curve or its variant - the rate response curve, so it is quite essential to take the influence of the wireless environment on this gap (rate) response curve into consideration. After a detailed analysis of the transmission time of IEEE802.11 DCF mechanism, the author managed to derive the expression of the aforementioned gap (rate) response rate model in 802.11 wireless environments, thus successfully obtained the theoretical properties of the measurement method in wireless case by using analysis tool of Matlab. To testify his analysis, the author divided the real case into two classes according to the position of the tight link, and carried out a series of experiment which include a set of test bed test and a set of real Internet test for each class. As expected, the experiment results coincide with the analytical result very well.
