A Study On Active Measurement Techniques For Network Bandwidth

The rapid development of Internet technology and network business has brought about dramatic increasing of network communication. To enhance the scientific network utilization and efficiency, network applications require enough bandwidth from network facilities, which needs service providers and customers to find out accurate bandwidth usage. The measurement study of the network bandwidth is one of the most importance methods to understand network running condition, also can be used in fields of route selection, congestion control, QoS verification, and traffic engineering, which is important for better network services.End-to-end bandwidth means the maximal transmission rate of the IP layer, so which is an important parameter of network performance. Because Packet pair technology is the most effective method for path bandwidth measurement, this paper advanced a improved method which didn't use the single long packet pair to measure path bandwidth based on the research of the technology. The method allayed the impact of cross traffic on packet pair technology and improves measurement accuracy, also which was proved by the experiment in reality.This paper designed and implemented a network bandwidth collection and analysis system based on the research of network bandwidth measurement tool. The system had two parts, one is network bandwidth collection part, the other one is network bandwidth analysis and display part. It had a visual and full-scale show for network link available bandwidth, network path bandwidth, network path available bandwidth, which overcomed the haziness and limitation disadvantage of single network measurement tool. So the system could offer better services for network management and monitor as the measurement study of the network bandwidth applied in reality.
