Bandwidth is an important resource in Internet, and it is also a key factor in many network technologies. With the explosive development of the scale, the number of the users, and also the services types of the IP networks, more rigorous schemes to operation, administration and maintenance are requires for building network infrastructure with high QoS and perfect information security. It is also of great importance to master the behavior of IP network for research and development of network device and protocols. Thus, the research on network measurement is paid more attention. Bandwidth measurement is one important part of network measurement. So the measurement of end-to-end bandwidth in the network has drawn interest of researchers. Based on a variety of theories, methodologies and principle of the end-to-end bandwidth, a large number of software were developed and applied to practice. Due to over simplified model, the incompleteness of the measurement methods and the constrains from the hardware of the testing equipment, these measurement tools have the disadvantages such as complex testing procedures, unsatisfying testing preciseness and constricted application regions etc.Based on studying many documents, this thesis analyses the existed internet end-to-end bandwidth measurement methods and presents the disadvantages of them. On the basis of analysis of the network available bandwidth and bottleneck bandwidth measurement, this paper presents a new probing algorithm based on IGI/PTR algorithm, and a method of bottleneck bandwidth measurement with different packet pair size based on packet pair technology. Finally the performances of the two probing method are verified and compared on the NS2 platform, and the simulation results show that the methods improve the existing measurement performance, decrease the disturbance of the cross traffic, and can obtain more exact value of available and bottleneck bandwidth.
