With high development of Internet, many QoS sensitive applications come to appear such as VoIP, VOD, Video conference ect. The requirement for network speed and network service QoS is higher and higher. End-to-end network performance measurement is one of the most importance methods to understand network running condition, finding network performance bottleneck, assigning network resource and loading network balance. End-to-end network performance bottleneck measurement will help the network administrator to locate network bottleneck, provide the scientific network performance data for Next Generation Internet designing. The major achievements of the thesis are described as follows:1) Research on network layer end-to-end performance bottleneck.Bandwidth and delay are two importance factors to affect IP network end-to-end path performance. After introducing the conception of bandwidth and delay and doing the real experiment on network, an improved bandwidth bottleneck and delay bottleneck measurement method is implemented in the thesis. The new bandwidth bottleneck measurement algorithm is based on available bandwidth measurement method which can avoid the effect of cross-traffic effectively. And the thesis analyzes the main effect factors on bandwidth and delay bottleneck measurement.2) Research on application layer end-to-end performance bottleneck.Application performance is the direct evaluation for user using network. Through application layer performance bottleneck measurement, the network administrator and operator can find and locate the performance bottleneck quickly. An application layer performance bottleneck measurement method is proposed in the thesis using the application emulation technology. And based on this method, some application layer performance bottleneck measurement tools is implemented such as HTTP, FTP, Email, Telnet, Streaming etc. Taking HTTP as illustration, the thesis introduces the detailed flow for HTTP application measurement.3) Design and implement of IP Network end-to-end performance bottleneck measurement and analysis system.
