Virtual Reality (Virtual Reality, or VR) technology is an arisen integrated information technology in 1990s. It has broad application prospects in many domains. Digitizing the ancient architecture protection technologies with virtual reality technology, Protecting and inheriting the ancient architecture which is Chinese nation's cultural wealth has vital significance. The goal of this paper is using the virtual reality technology to build the Greater Wild Goose Pagoda Buildings Roaming System based on VRML, and publish it on the network. The researches include:1. For modeling complicated and realistic ancient buildings, take modular processing into the scene, use geometric modeling and texture mapping technologies to achieve the three-dimensional virtual scene and its integration. Formed a good visual effect, true feeling and spectacular virtual scene.2. To achieving the balance between the realistic of the virtual scene and network load. Using hidden-surface processing, texture mapping and some other methods to optimize the model without affecting the accuracy. And the realistic of the scene and the network transmission speed reached the desired effect.3. To making users taking full immersion experience and interactive operating in the virtual scene. Find out ways of object controlling based on VRML sensor and JavaScript, Relying on these technologies, implement the system's roaming, collision detection, viewpoint switching and map navigation functions. In the process of collision detection, in accordance with the structure of Greater Wild Goose Pagoda Buildings, combine theaxial-aligned bounding boxes collision detection algorithm with the triangle collision detection algorithm, and simplify the traditional axial-aligned bounding boxes algorithm. Enabling the system acquire accurate and rapid detection of collision.4. Research the VRML's relevant specifications, characteristics and the document structure, analysis the 3D Web publishing system based on VRML, and achieve the system's Web publishing.
