Wireless sensor network, a new generation of sensor network, was formed by the combination of sensors embedded calculation, network and wireless communication technologies. The wireless sensor network is widely applied in military, commercial, medical and environment monitoring fields. The wireless sensor network consists of a large quantity of sensor nodes whose power, calculation ability and bandwidth are so limited that traditional wireless routing protocol is not suitable for wireless sensor network, it is the key point to save power and prolong the lifetime of network in the research of wireless sensor network. The Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) is envisioned by linking existing and emerging technologies of computers, wireless radio communications systems and sophisticated sensors to be used in vehicles and roads. In this article we propose a new routing protocol based on LEACH for highway sensor networks, taking into account the specific requirements for highly dynamic inter-vehicle networks. Based on the LEACH routing protocol, we improve the LEACH routing protocol, and then name the advanced routing protocol LEACH-PLUS, in which we improve cluster head selection algorithm and optimal threshold for cluster head selection of LEACH respectively.(1) The improvement on selection of cluster head: A new technique is proposed that adopts a mechanism using candidate list of the CH to achieve better energy efficiency of the whole network.(2) The improvement on the threshold for cluster head selection: Considering the remaining power of candidate cluster heads, the value is adjusted and a new cluster head selection mechanism is adopted.(3) LEACH-PLUS using the fixed cluster to limit communication between nodes in the local context that reduce overhead in the cluster head rotation.(4) Simulation on ns2 platform demonstrates that the improved routing protocol enables the whole network has long lifetime on the low power level and has comparatively good power optimum property.
