With the development of wireless telecommunication, embedded system and data processing technology, a small-sized single chip integrating sensor module, microprocessor module and wireless communication module become a reality. This kind of small sensor nodes can be deployed into the environment, and then they will form an Ad Hoc style network, through which the sensed data will be transmitted to the end user. Wireless sensor network (WSN) can be used in such areas as industrial and agricultural automation and defense systems. It has attracted a lot of attention from all over the world. In the applications of wireless sensor networks, sensor nodes are usually powered by unchangeable battery. How to efficiently utilize the limited energy to prolong the lifetime of WSN has become the main research problem. Also, as long as the application oriented features of WSN are concerned, traditional energy control protocol can not be used in WSN directly. This paper discusses the energy efficient performance of ZigBee protocol for Wireless Sensor Network, and proposed a cross-layer based communication protocol CEECP. This protocol takes the MAC sub-layer and network layer as well as parameters that will affect the efficiency of network into consideration. Simulation results tell us that the proposed protocol can efficiently reduce the energy consumption of wireless sensor nodes, thus prolonging the life time of the network.
