It is believed that the wireless sensor networks will be utilized extensively in the future. Cross layer design technique which jointly optimize several layers of protocol stack could improve network performance significantly. The gist of this thesis focuses on the energy efficiency of cross layer optimization in wireless sensor networks. Primarily, cross layer optimization of cooperative transmission system, with fixed number of nodes, has been analyzed. Considering both circuit and information transmission energy consumption, a comparison of the overall energy consumption and delay between cooperative transmission system and non-cooperative system was proceeded. And then, a scheme, which cross layer optimize the cooperative transmission system, with random number of nodes, has been proposed. Finally, under different requirement of PER, the energy efficiency of non-cooperative system and cooperative transmission system with random number of nodes, has been compared. The simulation results show that the cross layer optimization we proposed could minimize the network energy consumption.
