There are three kinds of angular error for machine guide including the pitch error, raw error and roll error. The accurate measurement of these errors is very important for the accuracy estimation and error compensation of the machine. The roll error measurement is the most difficult. Some methods are studied. However, the system is very complicated and independent, and it can not be integrated with the other parameters measuring system such as the straightness, the pitch and raw error.A new roll error measuring method is developed in this thesis. The TEC single-mode fiber-coupled laser module is used to decrease the laser beam drift, and the high accurate and stable measurement reference can be obtained. A special prism is used to be a sensitive part, the roll error can be obtained through straightness error of the two beams from the special prism. There are some advantages of simple structure, easy operation and real-time work in the device. The device can be used in the long distance measurement because of non-cable connect in the moving gauge head.The works accmmplished in this thesis include the optical structure design, the circuit arrangement and the measuring software development. A lot of experiments indicate that the system has good repetition and stability. The experiment comparing with gradienter indicates the method for roll error measurement is available, the accuracy of the system is 3arcsec.
