In China self-drive journey is a new form of tourism in recent years, its appearance has a profound of social and economic reasons. But the self-drive journey market is still in the preliminary stage in China, and the services provided by the market haven't met the needs of the tourist's demands. With the WebGIS development, some local main scenic site's text, photographs, and other information can be more easily and quickly transmitted to the self-drive tourist, which based on the existing network.Firstly, the paper compares the similarities and the differences between GIS and WebGIS, identifies the main research content and the technology, discusses the overview of the journey information distribution system. Secondly, takes the DaLian for example to research the Information Query System of Self-drive Journey in City, designs the system architecture, which bases on the analysis of self-drivers' demand. Finally, realizes the establishment and management of the spatial database and the attribute database, based on the ArcIMS to establish the Information Query System of Self-drive Journey. The system is divided into two modules: the data management module and the information query module. The system include two kinds of data, the spatial data and the attribute data. The data management module include the spatial data management (such as the layer management) and the attribute data management (such as the values definition) .The information query module includes the spatial information query and the attribute data query.By accessing to the system, the clients could receive the following services: the function of zoom-in and zoom-out, the map cruise, the hawk-eye guidance, the exact query and fuzzy query, the distance calculation, the map printout. To compare the similarities and the differences between the relational database and the spatial database, the system set up the contacts between ArcSDE and SQL Server 2000 so that the spatial data could be stored in the relational database. The client's viewer works in HTML mode. During developing and customizing the system, ArcXML, HTML, JSP programming languages are used. The functions of dynamic map presentation and Server-Clients' interaction are achieved.
