With the development of technology, the limitations of traditional experiments are becoming more and more severe, eg, the scheduled date, fixed lab, restricted person capacity, the low rate of instrument-renewal, as well as the possible poor experimental efficiency. While with the increase of the enrollment of the freshmen and the requirements for the professional practice ability of the college students, the traditional way of conducting experiments has obviously lagged behind the fast progress of education.Aiming at the present conditions of the college experiment in China, this paper designs a platform for virtual lab based on B/S configuration for the Process Automation Lab in Dalian University of Technology by summarizing the research and realization of the virtual lab fulfilling by the domestic and abroad experts. This paper introduces the general system structure, adopts the VRML to build the 3d instruments and space by imitating the practical lab; With the Fieldbus control system of the cascade tank equipment, this paper carries on the data acquisition experiments and gets the second-order mathematic model by system identification. It also simulates the level control process with Matlab. Through the above job, this paper realizes the virtual experiment based on VRML and Matlab. Besides, with the obtained mathematic model, this paper develops the optimal controller parameter tuning method based on genetic algorithm according to the process requirements, and the tests shows the guidance of the optimal parameter to the actual process engineering experiment. At the end of this paper, the research on the advanced control theory application is performed with this virtual lab and the simulation proves the effectiveness of the DMC on level control.This paper not only develops a virtual Lab which possesses advantages such as relatively free schedule and place comparing with the practice experiment , but also provide a virtual research platform to carry on the application of the advanced control theory.
