Driven by the increasing demand for bandwidth, optical access network experiences rapid growth. EPON (Ethernet Passive Optical Network) can provide multi-services accessing based on Ethernet. And also it offers high bandwidth and broad services with Ethernet technology and is being considered as a promising solution to the last-mile problem.The research in this dissert was supported by the National Hi-tech project"Giga Bits Ethernet Based on Passive Optical Network"and subsequent industrialization which aimed at bringing out practical EPON systems. Two different EPON systems were realized, one was WEPON based on WDM scheme and the other one was GEPON based on TDM scheme. An EPON network includes an optical line terminal (OLT) and an optical network unit (ONU). Onuses share the Optical Distribution Network (ODN) trunk fiber back to the Central Office. The OLT resides in the CO (POP or local exchange). The OLT system would typically be an Ethernet switch and Media Converter platform. And also perform PON system configuration,control and network management.The paper introduces the EPON architecture and its relevant techniques, and analyzes the function structure and essential requirement of EPON system control software. How to design and implement the control software system in EPON system are detailedly described. That is the greatest point that this paper want to emphasize. Thanks to the architecture of Quagga-0.99.1 routing code, EPON software architecture was finished in such limited time by porting Quagga to EPON system. The total software system achieved all the functions from device drive to network management, and was tested by the third part according to requirement.According to the working experiences and thinking in Lucent Technology, Bell-Labs Research China, the paper also make an overview to Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching (GMPLS). And then present a new PON mode, GMPLS based Passive Optical Network (GMPLS PON). Since the current PON technologies has some defects and the direction of future all-optical auto switching network is promisingly studied, the paper present an introduction of concept of GMPLS PON and its key technologies.
