EPON (Ethernet Passive Optical Network) is a kind of PON which is advanced by IEEE802.3 EFM (Ethernet for the First Mile). Based on fast Ethernet and TDM MAC (Media Access Control), EPON is a broad band access technology which uses point-to-mutipoint net structure and passive fiber to transmit data and provides a lot of service. It has many merits, such as low cost as Ethernet, good compatibility, medium sharing as PON technology, and so on. It provides much wider bandwidth for reliable delivering of bundled digital,voice and video services. So EPON technology is very popular with many enterprises.This dissertation mainly presents the design and implementation of software and hardware for EPON. The design of switch chip VSC7388 driver and software modules of VLAN and IGMP Snooping is analyzed particularly. The material contents are below:(1) The entire structure,work process,feature and advantage of EPON is analysed.(2) The structure of software and hardware of the EPON system is depicted. The embedded CPU is MPC8241. The key switching module is VSC7388 which is produced by VITESSE. The embedded operation system is Linux.(3) The structure of the firmware of VSC7388 is analysed. The design and implementation of VSC7388 driver is depicted.VSC7388 is controlled by MPC8241 via RS232, so the corresponding serial interface protocol is designed and depicted.(4) The principle of Ethernet second-layer protocol is introduced. The implementation of those protocols in VSC7388 is depicted.(5) In the end, the result of the EPON system test is presented. The result shows that the software system works normally and the EPON system works well.
