Access network has become a bottleneck in the development of modern communication networks, and broadband trend is inevitable. According to the transmission medium, access networks can be divided into xDSL, HFC cable modem, wireless and fiber access, etc. Optical access is the best means of access networks for future, and the passive optical network technology is seen as the most promising. The optoelectronic, electro-optical conversion in PON's optical modules makes it the indispensable key components. The difference between optical modules for PON and common optical modules embodies the essence of the physical layer in PON.As PON system downlink transmission is broadcasting,the transmitter for CO and the receiver for CPE work the same way with the traditional optical modules. The uplink transmission of PON uses the TDM technology. So, for ONUs, the transmitter must work at burst mode; and for OLT, the receiver must work at burst mode.To make it more convenient to interface with other equipments, EPON optical modules for OLT and ONU are designed accordance with the industry standards of small package, on the premise that increase the necessary monitoring functions. In this paper, modules for ONU with a package of SFF 2×5/2×6 and for OLT with a package of SFF 2×6 have successfully developed. Through the online tests, they can meet EPON system.In the prolegomenon, first analyses the structure of PON and educes the advantages of application PON technology, then introduces the latest development of EPON, and the optical transceiver module integration, in the end explains the source of task.Chapter 2 first analyses through the physical structure of EPON, educes the influence of optical modules. Then focuses on the key technologies: burst transmitter and receiver of PHY, as well as the special requirements for the PHY device.Chapter 3 is the specific design of optical modules, first the standard external interface for optical modules and the requirements for EPON optical modules are described in detail. Then the optical modules for OLT and ONU from general to material portion design are detailed described. Finally, the particular disposal for anti-interfere in design has introduced.Chapter 4 is the debugging and testing of optical modules, first for the general optical parameters, including the testing system and the test results analysis, then for the burst performance test methods and test results.
