EPON system is the main access of network transformation to achieve the FTTHgoal in recent years; it has been widely used in military, civil, commercial and otherfield. As we all know, the last hundred miles of the network bottleneck has been a keyissue affecting the user’s surfing experience, and the ADSL is the main access tonetwork in now days. With the development and improvement of the overall networktransition then it will reach the target of FTTH, then the main methods of overall useraccess network will be FTTH, FTTB+LAN, FTTC+DSL, HFC, WLAN and so on.However, in the transformation of traditional network, fiber universal transitionperiod, there must be a lot of fixed-line access equipment will be eliminated, and withthe growing popularity of PON equipment, the proportion of PON system energyconsumption in the communications industry will be higher and higher, so how toeffectively use resources to reduce the fixed-line network transformation equipmentcosts and reduce energy consumption will be key issue of fiber-optic networkubiquity.This article focuses on the special period of network transformation and thebasic functions of the EPON terminal equipment, referred the designs of SFP opticalmodule and SoC ONU, choosing the right chip, designing the reasonable hardwareand software, then designed the SFP EPON ONU which is in accordance withSFP-MSA SFF-8472and CTC EPON device standards. On one hand, this module canbe used in the device with SFP cage, then the device has the ability to access the PONnetwork, then it will reduce the cost on PON network transformation by using thetraditional network device. This module can be used as a transition device fortradition network equipment upgrades EPON networks. On the other hand, it willsave energy when the module is widely used. In this paper, the completion of thehardware and software parts of the design and implementation of the module. Themain work is as follows:The hardware is referred to SoC ONU and SFP burst optical module referencedesign; Hardware design mainly includes SFP EPON ONU design ideas and details ofeach part. The SFP EPON ONU hardware design include Digital Diagnostics modulesoftware design, Energy management module software design, CTC V3.0power saving sleep mode and the statistics of Ethernet performance module softwaredesign.The digital diagnostic software module is to get the diagnose information byreading and writing the EEPROM through I2C bus; the energy management moduleis a CLI function that can control the power of ONU interfaces, such as UNI, PON,I2C controller, CPU and so on; The sleep power saving module and Ethernetperformance statistics module are mainly for the standard of “China Telecom EPONequipment technical requirements V3.0” which designed to achieve the functions thatOLT controls ONU sleep and OLT gets ONU PON port performance statisticsthrough the expansion OAM protocol.This paper presents the module hardware design schematics and software designprinciples and code modules, then verify the basic functionality of the modulethrough Systematic test.Finally, the paper summarizes some of the design process and improvements canbe done in the future, and then expanded the application and prospects of the module.
