When the network video transmission and IPTV became hot, the latest video compression coding standard H.264 technology which developed jointly by ISO/IEC and ITU-T came into being. H.264 can preserve images two times more than current DVD discs,at the same picture quality and capacity; and it can provide more outstanding picture quality in the same bandwidth of the network. For these reason, H.264 coding standard applications coverage far-reaching, including a variety of network video communication systems, personal consumer electronics products, mobile multimedia communications field, even military applications. Currently, the H.264 applications research is the focus areas in digital video filed. As large-scale commercial deployment of this standard is possible because of many global manufacturers support and industry chain matured, developing H.264 decoders becomes the major manufacturers competing research topic.At first, this article briefly introduced the history of digital video standards since the emergence, including their major features and application environment. Then analysed the development, applications, algorithms and characteristics of H.264, gave its improvements and advantages compared to other video standards. After that, expounded the algorithm and decoding steps of the key technology of H.264: entropy coding, IDCT, intra prediction, inter prediction and de-blocking.The paper declassified H.264 through analysis and understanding of the principles, Discussing focusing on the structural design of H.264 decoder, the application of the decoder and the FPGA development environment of it. Then presented all key modules design detailed. Modular design pursued the lowest resource consumption and faster decryption speed. Gave analysis of all modules'resource cost and system clock cycle exertion. Finally, the analysis of the experiment results proved the system's availability and de-blocking filter is required.While the article stated in the various key technologies in H.264 design, highlighted pieces to deblocking filter.
