With the rapid development of computer technology and multimedia communication, digital video coding plays an increasingly important role in our life. The new generation video coding standard H.264 which is released by JVT can provide better compression efficiency and higher quality of decoded picture. It has become a focus in industry.As an important part in video coding, intra prediction and inter prediction can reduce spatial redundancy and time domain redundancy in video sequence effectively. However, the improvements are based on the cost of rapid increased complexity. Therefore, it is urging to make researches on optimized algorithm in order to satisfy the industry of wireless network and real-time coding and transmission of H.264.The existence algorithms of fast motion estimation and fast intra prediction mode decision are discussed in this paper, and performance comparisons between these algorithms are made with simulations on JM at the end of each chapter. Then, for the purpose of saving computational complexity of intra coding in H.264, a spatial and transformed features-based fast intra coding algorithm is presented. It turns out that the proposed method can save 60% to 70% coding time with neglectable loss in coding efficiency compared with the algorithm in H.264.
