The rapid development of the wireless communication system not only enables users to maintain reliable contact in a mobile environment but also the free access to information at any time any where. This feature brings up a prosperous world market for the location-based service and applications and further catalyzes the renovation of location techniques in various wireless networks.ZigBee technology, based on the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol, is a newly developed short range wireless communication technology with the' merits of low cost, low power consumption at comparable lower data rate. While the ZigBee technology is more and more frequently adopted in application areas like home automation, telemetering telecontol, mobile automation, medical treatment and so on, the real-time localization in the ZigBee network becomes a hot topic recently. This paper, aiming at ZigBee network, investigates the indoor wireless location techniques and implements a real-time location and tracking system with the target use in the office and corridor.Several well-developed wireless localization techniques in mobile communication network and Wireless LAN (WLAN) are first discussed. Based on numerous measurements, this thesis evaluates location algorithms using RF propagation loss model and location fingerprinting, and furthermore, compares comprehensive performance merits including accuracy, precision, robustness and complexity. Then a location method is proposed by taking advantage of the correlation of Link Quality Indicator (LQI) and Received Signal Strength Indicatior (RSSI). Finally, the realization of a real-time location and tracking system for the office and corridor in the ZigBee network is introduced. The processing architecture of the system is analyzed with the focus on the selection of the location and tracking mechanism and the function module of the control center.
