Wireless sensor network (WSN) is a wireless network, which consists of a large number of sensor nodes. All sensor nodes in the network have the abilities of apperceiving, computing and communication, which form a network through ad-hoc mode. It attracts more and more attention in the front edge technology, and is widely used in the field of distributed data collection. ZigBee is a wireless communication technology with the characteristics of low-cost, low power consumption and low rate, which is launched in the end of 2004. It is an excellent choice for the task of organizing wireless sensor network.This subject originates from a cooperation project of Dalian JingTuo Co.LTD and Dalian University of Technology. The target of this project is to build up a ZigBee wireless sensor network, which is applied to the field of environmental monitoring.The network topology is designed based on the analysis of the needs for wireless environmental monitoring network and ZigBee protocol. A multi-network structure, which consists of a number of sensor nodes in the bottom, a data gather node in the middle layer, and a computer on the top layer is constructed. The network platform for environmental monitoring is built up with ZigBee compatible module JN5121 as its core device. Finally, the software development is completed. In this step, a method for building up network quickly is established. For Data collection synergic and multi-hop Data transmission, the way of communication between network nodes and data transmission mechanism is designed. For sensor nodes can join or break away from the network freely, the dynamic management program is development. To achieve the objective of real-time display and data storage in database, computer program is development with Visual C++ 6.0 and SQL Server 2000.Temporary installation is supported by This ZigBee monitoring Network. Multi-node, multi-parameter data collection is achieved with automatic network setting up, and data transmission automatic. Its flexibility allows network nodes to be adding, removing or changing in position easily. Because of the needs of complex Equipment, a lot of cabling, and large infrastructure makes the existing measure of Environmental monitoring inability for unexpected events, and difficult to move node's position. As a new approach for Environmental Monitoring this ZigBee network can offset these insufficiencies.
