Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), an interdisciplinary and newlydeveloped research area, is a trend of the past few years. It involves wirelesssensor techniques, embedded computing, modern network and wirelesscommunicationtechnologies, distributedinformationprocessingtechnologies, and provides a way for a variety kind of satellite sensor reading, real-timemonitoring,sensingandcollectinginformationfrommonitoredenvironment.The fast development in semiconductors, wireless communication andmicro-systems makes wireless sensor network to develop very quickly inrecent years. With the help from advanced micro-electronics technologies, micro processing technologies, new design in system SOC chip, newnanometer materials, modern communication methods, and computernetworks, wireless sensor networks become minimized, integrated, systematize, multi-functionalandespeciallylowenergyconsumption.Comparetotraditional computernetwork, wireless sensornetworkhas thefollowingadvantages:1. Integrating information from different angles and multiple levels inWSNcangreatlyincreateSNRinthenetwork.Thisisoneofthemostdifficult problems occurring in traditional centralized informationgatheringsystems.2. The design feature of low cost and high redundant strengthens thefaulttoleranceinWSN.3. Deploy wireless sensor nodes within a short distance with the targetsgreatly reduce the environment affects and boost up the systemperformance. 4. Applying multiple sensors in a single node is good to increase thedetectingperformance.5. Wireless communications among multiple nodes enable the system tocoveralargearea.6. With the help from some mobile nodes, the system can automaticallyadjust it network topology and reduce detecting shadow and blackspot.Since WSN has so many advantages than traditional network, it is nowusedinmanyareas,suchasmilitary,industrial,citymanagement,bio-medicaltreatment, environment monitoring, emergency situation, anti-terrorism,remote administration and etc. All these can show that WSN out performedtraditional network in manyaspects, hence, it is veryimportant to do researchinwirelesssensornetworks.During my internship in Mambo Science and Technology Cooperation, Iwas involved in the design and implement of wireless sensor networkmonitoring platform. This platform is a software system for monitoring allthese data in the wireless sensor network, gather and analyze these data forpublic service. This monitoringsystem can be used for utilitycompanies, likewater, electronic and gas companies, gathering data and control these unitremotely. This system followed the building block design method; everymodule in the system is independent. The whole system is capable ofreceiving and analyzing data; representing the current system status and nodestatus in graphs; sending commands to sensor nodes in the network; messagealert;intimenotificationofimportantsysteminformation, andetc. This platform includes the following modules: Listener, analyzer, converter, storage, message platform, monitor, and control panel and messagecenter. The listener module uses sockets to communicate and exchange date withthebasestation, this modulenot onlyin charge ofthe data receiving, butalso response of initial decoding of these data frame from base station andthensendingthem tothemessagecenter.Analyzerwill filterthedatawiththerules and get the data which the users want. Converter will analyze the datainformation and pass the results to information center. The storage module isused to store all the data collected. Message platform is a generally moreindependent module; it is used to send out short messages. All the resultdata will be processed and filtered, after that, events will be triggered and themessage platform will notify users by sending out short messages. Themonitor module is used to monitor the system's data status. For example, itwill monitor all the nodes status in this WSN and data collected by thesenodes. It can also used for data query according to users'need. All the UIcontrols, suchastemperatureandmetersinthismodulecanbeshowndirectlyto user in a visualized manner. The main function of control panel is sendingout commands to the network and tracks the responses to these commands.Including management command (e.g. adding or deleting nodes), feedbackinformation query and etc. Every command is treated as an object. Relatedinformation can be shown and queried in the main frame. Message center isthecoreofthissystem.Thismoduleisresponsibleforreceivingandrecordingorder messages from other module, and sending out results from monitor tocorrespondingmodules.During the system implementation procedure, my responsibilities are thedata receiving, analyzing and processing. Moreover, I was also in charge ofimplementing the functions of the message module. Simulated base stationand monitor communicate via socket. Base station will generate data in XMLformat, whichincludeauniquedataindicator, basestationid, applicationtypeindicator and data value. After receiving these data, monitor will first decodethem and then store them in the database. All these processed data will be retrieved bythe engine module in later phase. The rule engine module is usedto filter data. Users can define their own rules and store them in the database;they can also delete unused rules. Current stored rules can be used by ruleengine, and the desired results will be sent back to the users. These resultswill be sent back to public users by the message platform via short message. For example, a gas insufficient rule can be set, and data will be processedaccording to this rule. After processing, the results include user information, anduserswillbenotifiedviashortmessagethattheirgasisinsufficientnow. To conclude, this platform is a data monitoring system based on wirelesssensor network and can be used to public services. It can be widely used andappliedinmanydifferentareassuchaswater, electronicandgasmeasurementandremotecontrol.
