In the past years, Java GUI applications are mainly based on AWT/Swing. But because Swing requires much memory consumption and runs slowly, and the application always looks ugly and don't match the style of OS. All make Java behaves badly on GUI.With the popularity of Eclipse and Eclipse Plug-in Architecture, and the introduction of Eclipse RCP and OSGI in Eclipse 3.0 release, Java has this powerful Eclipse RCP framework to develop GUI application, and now more and more enterprises build their applications on Eclipse RCP.Compared to traditional Swing, Rich client applications based on Eclipse RCP provides professional and native appearance, and better efficiency, require less memory consumption, and provides a robust component model, and better reusability, scalability, maintainability, and scalability. This paper introduces the Eclipse RCP framework and related technologies, such as SWT/JFace, Eclipse plug-in Architecture, OSGI, and also discusses how to use Eclipse RCP framework in actual project and also states the main problems encountered during development. Finally, the problems requiring further studies are discussed.
