Technologies of information and network has developed steadily and become more mature. Such being the case, the traditional academic exchange approaches can no longer meet the needs of the fast-paced information-sharing. The traditional academic publishing model is inefficient, and always with copyright and cost Issues. This led to the open access movement, which has promoted the academic exchanges among the various disciplines and across countries. However, there are not much open resources which researchers can get. Meanwhile, the daily research work in academic institutions produced a large number of complex, digital files and research publications. Academic institutions have to spend quite a lot of time and effort to collect, collate custody of such documents. On the one hand, it is inconvenient to use such information, and very troublesome for information sharing among various institutions.Under such context, the Institutional Repository (IR) has been developed at a rapid speed. Institutional Repository system is the application in academic institutions to solve the issue of digital resources management.First, this paper discusses the domestic and international IR background, current situation and future development trends based on the survey analysis. Then it describes the characteristics of the IR and the construction of institutions of agencies and academic exchanges before it explains the significance of the open access and the concept of IR. By close examination of the category of IR software, we focus on several commonly-used open-source software systems. The paper puts forward that the agencies need to follow the storage industry standards and technical specifications.Secondly, this paper introduces the IR software DSpace, analyses the functional decomposition and gives a summary of the development of the DSpace projects. Then we analyze the data processing, users and digital object management, browsing and retrieval, statistical functions, subscription services and so on in detail of the DSpace system, and study the DSpace system of the three-layer structure and its corresponding logic functions. A summary of the advantages and disadvantages of DSpace system is also provided. Thirdly, the paper identifies the needs for IR system and the goals and significance of building such system in Shanghai Jiao Tong University, including the functional requirements and technology needs. It presents a model design of Shanghai Jiao Tong University IR system. In addition, it elaborates the detailed process of system implementation, which includes the coding environment settings, information exchange, Web interface and the Chinese support indexing, file formats and metadata expansion, the customization and workflow management and opening up.Last but not least, based on IR system the author designs the model of the academic information platform, through the analysis of the current situation in SJTU. The author goes on to introduce the institutions of scientific research personnel information platform on actual demand, then puts forward the innovative guidelines and approaches construction of the academic information platform, thus combining academic institutions, academic portals, academic exchange, and virtual learning applications for the exchange of information, as well as realizing interoperability among academic information management systems and electronic resource systems. The author puts the SOA design patterns in the construction of the system; maps out the academic information platform technology framework, and provides the concept of Scholarly Information Service Bus (SISB). The author also explains the functional decomposition of the system for services and the definition standard interface based on the analysis of IR academic information services platform process. In the end, the paper proposes the software framework of IR-based academic information platform for SJTU.The author attempts to leverage the academic information platform construction, in order to make a fundamental change of the impeded exchange of information in the academic institutions and the situation in which research outputs are subject to the traditional model of the current academic exchanges. In addition, by doing so, author hopes that the scientific research and production process can be facilitated and the efficiency of research outputs improved.
