This dissertation reviews the history of semiconductor industry and IC design methodology at first. Then the dissertation stresses the significance of deep sub-micron (DSM) physical design, which must be properly handled to narrow the Microprocessor development gap between our country and advanced nations.This dissertation analyzes the course and impacts of deep sub-micro process. Then detailed measures to solve the problem are also proposed. Then these measures are successfully applied in the physical design of a kind of high performance microprocessor.In the dissertation, the IC design flow is analyzed. The physical design flow of microprocessor adopted in this dissertation includes the full-custom design of datapath and the cell-based design of control module. The complex design method keeps the high performance, and at the same time, the design complexity, the chip area and the power are reduced. Based on the study, the schematic and layout design of the datapath in a 64 bit full-custom ALU was finished, and the most important part is the fast adder.The floorplan, advance placement and routing, timing and congestion-driven placement, clock tree synthesis, routing, verification in the design flow are studied. And detailed measures to solve signal integrity in the DSM process are also proposed.The DSM physical design flow proposed in the dissertation is suitable and meaningful for general IC design.
