Structural health monitoring (SHM) and wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are both hotspot researches of current industrial technology. For the characteristic and demand of WSNs and SHM, this paper mainly researches and develops a novel design of wireless sensor node, which is named CuteNew, for structural health monitoring. By using modularization design, CuteNew is composed of four modules including sensor module, digital processing module, wireless RF module and power manage module. Moreover, this paper provides the test of CuteNew's performance and validates CuteNew on the application platform of SHM. Experiments validate that CuteNew has outstanding character of small-size, low-consumption and low-cost. And its transmission range, robustness, heterogeneity and security are all meet the need of SHM.Firstly, the native and oversea background and research situation of wireless sensor node are introduced in this paper. Secondly, based on the requirements of SHM and WSN, the design factors and the ZigBee technology are illustrated. Thirdly, the implements and functions of each hardware module and software development platform of CuteNew are present. Then, this paper makes lots of experiments to analyze and evaluate the performance of CuteNew. Finally, applying on the platform of SHM, the wireless sensor network with multi-hop is established and researched. In the future work, more attention will be focused on the profile of CuteNew and the network of large-scale structural health monitoring system for real aviation composite structures.
