Structural health monitoring (SHM) and wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are both hotspot researches of current industrial technology. Wireless sensor networks provide a good solution for the state monitoring of large-scale structures. Wireless sensor networks can greatly reduce the number of devices wiring and the weight of the monitoring system. Since the wireless sensor networks is a parallel distributed processing system, the wireless sensor nodes have signal processing abilities, much information can be processed locally, the system operating speed and reliability can be improved observably.Current application researches on wireless sensor networks mainly focus on the environmental monitoring area, the medical care and the military domain areas. The practical structure monitoring application research based wireless sensor network is the initiation of the exploration stage. The main researches in this thesis are as follows:(1) Based on the general framework of wireless sensor node, combined with the requirement of structural health monitoring, a wireless strain node which is called Cute-007 is designed by the modular design method. The node is composed of power module, multi-channel strain sensing acquisition module, data processing module and wireless communication module. The performances of the node are tested and calibrated.(2) Based on the understanding of the software of wireless sensor networks in other applications, a multi-clusteres in different channels wireless sensor networks structure is developed. Software programs are designed for wireless base node, wireless relay node and wireless strain node by using TinyOS. The wireless data packages could be reliable transmission and the networks could be self- organization by managing the packages response interval.(3) To verify the functionality of the designed wireless sensor networks for structural health monitoring. An evaluation experiment is completed on a test piece of real aircraft. The application shows that the developed system has good performance in monitoring structural strain.
