With the development of virtual reality technology and computer graphics,imitating the plants in nature by computer has become a heated issue ofresearch. Combined with Zhejiang province-funded program, this paperdiscusses the problems existed in the modeling of Visual Plant morphology.The contents and the achievements are as follows:(1) Construct a new L-system based on sub- structure algorithmDespite the wide application of L-system, the multi-computation,multi-construction of the same structure in the traditional iterative algorithmresults in low efficiency. In order to solve this problem, this paper presents anew Improved L-system which makes use of the advantages of sub-structurealgorithm. It not only improves the performance of L-system, but also reducesthe memory space.(2) Construct the parameter database of plant-structure model23 kinds of plant-structure models defined by botanists can depict thecontinuous diversification features of plant structure. According to thetopologies of these structure models and Petri Net, we construct a corresponding L-system and set up a parameter model database depicting theplant topology. The database provides the models for the imitation of plants;consequently, it establishes the fundation for fast construction of plant modelsalso.(3) Put forward an improved branch algorithmBy doing some researches on generic branch algorithm, this paper gives animproved branch algorithm which not only can imitate the branch shapes of theplant, but also solve the gap problems existed in generic branch algorithm.Moreover, the branch algorithm doesn't increase the cost time comparing withthe generic branch algorithm.(4) Develop a plant-imitation prototype systemThis paper conformities the research achievements mentioned above,builds a plant-imitation prototype system based on improved L-system. In theprotype system, the users can make use of the plant-struct database and theorgan database offered by system, and builds the individual plant.
