With the rapid development of virtual reality and computer science, the simulation of virtual plant development has gradually become a hotspot research topic. The virtual plant purposed of demonstrating plant vision effect and applied in business, education, amusement, and computer aided design has achieved a relatively mature development. The simulated plants have flowery colors with natural configuration. However, in the research field of agriculture and forestry, the plant simulation consistent with botany rule has not reach the applied phase, and the simulation of plant growth appearance under control of plant physiology and outer environment has not attained expectant effect. The virtual plant research used in agriculture and forestry has large potential in research and great significance in practice.The investigation of virtual plant growth in this thesis belongs to the field of agriculture and forestry. The simulation of plant growth takes agriculture and forestry as background to guide the production through simulation experiments of plant development. It aims not only to simulate the development of external plant configurations, but also respect the botany theory with accurate and reliable evidence of plant growth. To simulate the growth process objectively, this thesis considered both inner factors of plant growth and outside environmental effects, built up a new model combined the physiology and zoology model which reflects the plant inner growth mechanism with another model which build plant configuration and represent growth process, and carried out the visual simulation of plant growth regulated by plant hormone.The main work in this thesis can be concluded as follows:①This work investigated the research progress of virtual plant at home and abroad, compared different kinds of virtual plant growth models and respective achieved methods, analyzed the advantages and shortcomings of these methods and partially verified the experiments based on main methods.②After analyzing different kinds of growth molding methods deeply, a new relatively perfect framework based on L System which can be used in plant growth simulation was proposed. This model systemically simulated the plant growth considering the inner DNA, physiological model, outside environment and the plant configuration, achieve the interaction of plant and environment. ③Based on the theory of L System, we developed a computer system called Virtual Plant 2.0 to make the framework actualize in VS2005, which used the stand graphic programming interface of OpenGL. Besides realizing the foundation theory of L System, Virtual Plant 2.0 enhanced the L System function including "color list" and "plant growth Bezier list", introduced texture and illumination to romance the plant organ to make the effect more natural and real, designed the "3DS" model for the plant organs to get better visual effect, and achieved the interaction between plant and environment.④Plant hormone mechanism was further investigated, including synthesis, transportation, distribution, and decomposition of plant hormone and the principle of regulation effect on plant growth.⑤Experiment about the regulation effect of plant hormone on plant growth was carried out by "Virtual Plant 2.0". A visual simulation of plant growth regulated by IAA and ethylene, which are two representative of phytohormone, was carried out in detail. Furthermore, the surrounding factors were introduced in the simulation process of plant growth, and these inner and outer factors influenced plant growth were simulated.
