With the continuing development of telecom network, many kinds of communication instruments occur. In telecom field, it is common that the E1 interface, which has 2Mbps rate, is used to transfer data between communication instruments as the physical layer interface. At first, this thesis introduces the detailed conception of E1 interface and analyses the format of E1 frame. Then, it introduces FPGA developing technology, process and tools. After that, it brings forward a design project, which uses an E1 interface chip to implement E1 interface function in FPGA system. In the design, FPGA is used as a processor, controlling E1 interface chip and data process. On the other hand, E1 interface chip takes charge of receiving and transmitting E1 signals. The hardware circuit of E1 interface board is designed and implemented in circuit design software Protel99.Combining FPGA developing, circuit designing and E1 transfering technology, this thesis researches and designs an E1 interface borad, taking FPGA system as the core. It mentions instructions during the design of E1 interface borad, as well as the system test method, process and experience. In the end, it finishes design and test of emulator for E1 interface board. Our country has plenty of E1 resource, so the implementation of E1 interface board will be helpful for embedded system applications in larger area. The design of this thesis has three advantages. Fitst, it adopts modulization design method. FPGA system and E1 interface chip are designed separately, which is easy to modify and test. Second, the FPGA system hardware platform is universal, on which different kinds of software can be deployed to implement different functions. Third, the cost of the overall design is low. The hardware platform is designed independently, using low-cost FPGA processor, as well as other common peripheral devices. Besides, it uses FPGA developing tools(QuartusII and NiosII IDE) for free.
