With the rapid development of mobile communications, many organizations for standardization and countries are concentrating on the research of standards and technologies of 3G (3rd Generation Mobile Communications). Meanwhile, 3G networks have been launched and providing commercial services in Japan, Korea, Europe and USA. As one of the three mainstream wireless interface standards for 3G recognized by the ITU (International Telecommunication Union), WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) system, which inherits the benefits of standardization and open networks from the GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) system, has been developed maturely and deployed widely. It is preponderant that more band-wide, faster speed, more powerful capability and richer display can be provided in 3G systems than that in 2G networks. Based on these technology advantages, plenty of services and applications with individuation and diversity can be provided to the subscribers by 3G networks, which will bring brand-new mobile life style and exciting enjoying experience. All of these have become the source of attraction to the subscribers with 3G networks and services. From the carrier's perspective, service capability and service content are considered to be the key concerns for sticking the existing customers and also attracting new ones. For 3G and IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) networks, while multimedia content is widely accepted to be the dominating traffic conveyed by the network, multimedia based applications and services will be considered to be the most valuable ones in the industry.MRF (Multimedia Resource Function) is a network entity defined by 3G and IMS network, which is used to provide multimedia capability support for 3G/IMS service and media load.Based on the 3G/IMS network, this paper proposes an implementation scheme for the MRF entity, which is utilizing modularized design and loose coupling architecture. The MRF can provide multimedia resource function for various services in 3G/IMS network, including basic user interact function (voice and video playing, DTMF collecting, recording, voice mixing), advanced user interact function (IVR, messaging), and multiparty conference function (audio conference, video conference), etc.In chapter one, the conceptions of 3G and IMS network are introduced, including the development course of 3G, the architecture and standard of WCDMA/UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System), along with the layered architecture, function entity and network interface of IMS network.Chapter two carries out the general design of MRF entity. The MRF design scheme, including functional view, process view, deployment view, are first explained. Then the designs for the several subsystems of MRF, such as MRFC (Multimedia Resource Function Controller), MRFP (Multimedia Resource Function Processor), and MRMS (Multimedia Resource Management System), are proposed.Chapter three concentrates on the design and implementation of key technologies in MRF, including the IRCP (Internal Resource Control Protocol) interface protocol of Mp reference point, the MSML (Media Sessions Markup Language) media capability control interface, the stack adapter function in MRFC subsystem, and the board adapter function in MRFP subsystem.Chapter four makes a conclusion and points out the current progress and future plan of MRF development.
