With the development of network and computer storage technology, the structure of collection in a library has been deeply changed. As an important part of library document resources, electronic resources develop quickly in recent years. Funds for buying databases of a university library has already occupied one third of all expenditure for buying document resources. We must face up these problems such as how to find out service effect of databases exactly, how to build up a scientific and reasonable system of collection, how to improve performance of investments, and how to purchase high quality databases. The dissertation based on all of above.The dissertation contains three chapters. The evaluation and selection of databases are analyzed in the first chapter. First of all, the dissertation defines electronic resources and databases evaluation. Then it analyzes status of databases evaluation at home and abroad, and its significant of estimating and creating strategy of selecting databases based on the problems existed in databases evaluation at present.The second chapter expounds the principles and methods of databases evaluation. Which includes not only general principles but also special principles of databases evaluation by document metrology. It discusses from three different aspects which are qualitative method, quantitative method and other else methods. Then the dissertation establishes the basic index systems of databases evaluation, on which it evaluates partial databases of Harbin Engineering University library. It also draw a conclusion from that and makes a simply review about performances of using databases.The third chapter introduces the principles and methods of selecting databases. It includes the adequate principles and idiographic methods, and detailed purchasing mode.
