The commercial application of stereoscopic displays based on parallax barrier are restricted with ghosting. In this paper, after making a deep study of computer 3D vision, Panum's area theory and the imaging mechanism of parallax barrier displays, Firstly, the theoretical reason of ghosting is analyzed from the aspects of Panum's area and viewing zones, and two approaches of improving ghosting are given. Secondly, an optic structural model of the displays is built, and formulas of the pixels intensity that are seen by human eyes are also deduced. Thirdly, the evaluation of ghosting is analyzed and a method of ghosting definition is also given, the relation curve between the extent of ghosting and the distance of the viewer and the screen is obtained by software simulation. Finally, the paper summarizes some achievements that are gained and future works, and prospects for the development of parallax barrier displays.
