To make the neural network has the optimal structure as well as keeping good performance, these years many researchers have focused their effort on selecting the optimal structure of a neural network.Activated sludge process is a complicated biochemistry reaction process which has characteristics of high non-linearity, time varying, indetermination and lag, and it is difficult to build process model. Neural network can build the model only with the input and output samples of the object without prior knowledge and complicated formula derivation which lead neural network make great effect on complex object modeling.Moreover, for it would cost lots of money on plant site experiments and the technical establishment couldn't be modified as once established, therefore, it has great practical meaning to study on the dynamic simulation of activated sludge process.Aiming at the practical problems on activated sludge process, a self-organized algorithm was presented in the paper, and further applied it in soft measurement of COD, and the simulation results show that the algorithm was effective. The main content of this paper is as following:⑴A fast unit pruning algorithm which based on the OBS algorithm for the configuration of neural network is presented in the paper. The simulation results showed that it could reduce both neural network complexity and learning time.⑵The paper used the fast unit pruning algorithm in the soft measurement of COD in the wastewater treatment in order to get a model of soft measurement of COD which was based on the self-organized neural networks. The results of comparative studies with OBS show that the fast unit pruning algorithm can not only reduce the complexity of the neural network but also quicken the training speed.⑶The paper put forward on a dynamic simulation system of activated sludge process which was established by LabVIEW. The system could reflect the dynamic simulation of the secondary treatment of the wastewater treatment process integrally and properly.The research in the paper has somewhat effect for reference to the model development and simulation technology exploiture of wastewater treatment in our country. But owing to the limit of condition and time, there are many sides need to be ameliorated and discussed.
