At the present time, the industry of mass communication is facing how to adapt to new situation in China. Mass media are affected so much by commercialization as the market economy becomes dominant that a series of changes shows. The industry of mass media has been independent, especially in economy, which is most important. However, the tendency of media culture that we're worried is becoming more and more vulgar except for the advantage of economic independence. In the background of commercialization and consumerism, the masses are cultivated to be professional consumers short of the ability of thinking and judging slowly! Now it's a key what's the essential function of the mass media, which many experts pay attention to. In history, the mass media always played the role of builder public sphere. But today, facing polydirectional inclination of media culture and change quickly in media technology, it's time to take into account the function and representation of mass media in constructing public sphere.The theory of public sphere is summarized by the numbers in"transconformation of public sphere", written by Jurgen Habermas who is famous sociologist. This thesis is based on the theory of public sphere, analyses the use of papers in constructing public sphere from the end of Qing Dynasty to New Culture Campaign first. Then the thesis analyses the function and representation of papers, television and network in epoch of mass media, including papers reviews, public journalism, BBS, rising blog and so on.But there are so many disadvantages in system of mass media, consciousness of democratic supervisor and news professionalism. So we have to acknowledge that too much limiting factors exist. After the analysis of function and representation of mass media in constructing public sphere, this thesis analyses these limiting factors.
