At present, about 120 million migrant workers make living in urban cities all over China. Under the restriction of traditional dual social structure, migrant workers are in the state of predicament of "adoption in economy, but marginalization in society". As one of the most vigorous group and main part of discourse contradiction in rural area among Chinese farmers, how migrant worker group acquires its suitable status from mass media is a problem which should be seriously considered by both social media and migrant workers their own. According to the process of Chinese farmers migration, the dissertation synchronically researches the changes of media formulation and diachronically analyzes how strong the relations are among self-cognition, social evaluation and media agenda, which is a comparatively weak point in the research of the field. Based on the analysis above, the dissertation researches the reports about migrant workers in mainstreaming newspapers from the Year of 1984 to 2007 by the combined method of text analysis and qualitative analysis. It researches the changing process of content in the paper reports in the past 23 years and condition of migrant workers' discourse based on the theory of effect of communication research, generally analyzes the function of media. The dissertation also drew conclusion according to mass media's social values, cognition of social roles, social tendency, social aid, construction of social circumstances etc. Finally the dissertation tries to make objective judgment toward communicative behaviors of mass media, and offer some constructive suggestions to the guide of such behaviors.
