Using the sociology and journalism research results related to the migrant workers forreference, the study combs news reports on1978-2010by framing analysis approach, with anaim to reveal the media image’s change of the migrant workers. What’s more, it tries to revealthe role of the media in solving the problem of migrant workers and the influence in the wholeprocess of social transformation.From the perspective of journalism, the paper summarize the news report about migrantworkers based on the analysis of newspaper text and apply the methodology of quantitativeto explore the characteristics of the news report about the migrant workers throughout theconcept from history to reality, which is in order to reveal the different image of migrantworkers in the different media. The paper is mainly focused on the media image’s change ofthe migrant workers during the thirty years, and the study result shows that the image ofmigrant workers in the newspaper experiencing three periods: negative image of permanentresidence, the image of manual worker and the image of vulnerable group.Based on the above, the author tries to reveal the process of social modernization andurbanization in Shanghai by the study of the media image’s change of migrant workers. Then,further explore the media’s role in the social transformation and the responsibility of themedia to disseminate the migrant workers’ image. Finally, the author hopes to make usefulsuggestions on solving the migrant workers’ problem and building a harmonious society.
