Digital video surveillance system, integrated with compute,multi-media, communication and network technologies, has played significant role in more and more fields. The development of compression of digital video data promote the change and creative of digital video surveillance system.Firstly, the paper introduces the general development of video surveillance system. Then correlative techniques of embedded video surveillance system are analyzed. Based on an overview of the development of standards for compression of digital video data, considering the fact of video surveilance systems, this paper has put forward a scheme for embedded digital video surveillance system based on MPEG-4. Digital video recorder (DVR) is the main body of the digital video surveillance system, and it consists of three modules:video compression module, real-time monitoring module and system module. After several diffrent MPEG4 application specific chip has been compared, the chip adopted is IME6400 of INTIME Corp. Hardware design of video compression based-on IME6400 is discussed in chapter 3; Chapter 4 analyzes transmission line theory and rules of design of high-speed circuit board; Chapter 5 introduces the generation and download of IME6400 firmware. Finally, the whole work of hardware design is summarized.
