UART(Universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter) is mainly used in the serial communications of control devices, and has lent itself amply to various applications in communications between the Modem, test equipment, comsumer electronics and central processors such as PC, micro controller. It also finds application in the area of small communication networks. In SOC designs, asynchronous serial communication interface technique has become an indispensable part in the architecture and plays a very important role in the performance of the overall electronic system.In this paper, Top-Down design process is researched, which includes system partition, coding, function simulation, logic synthesis, post-synthesis simulation, Place&Route, timing simulation, selection of chip, etc. Different EDA tools are used on different design phase, including Modelsim, Syplicity, Quartusâ…ˇand so on.In practice, this paper gives a detailed design implementation of various UART modules including reciever/transmitter, baud-rate generator, synchronous FIFO (First In First Out), Modem control module, interface module. In UART design, optimization on specific module design is carried on with regard to area, speed and stability. System compatibility is enhanced due to the parametric design methodology. In view of the special specifications imposed on the UART clocking, system clocking scheme is also optimized. In the end, Logic Synthesis, Timing simulation and analysis have also been performed. The result shows that the design specification is reached. The implemented UART can be used in situations such as transmition using standard asynchronous serial RS-232 protocal. It also find its applications in various areas, such as providing Modem the control signal, programming serial data, programmable baud rate generating, full duplex transmiter and receivier, error testing and interupt generating, interrupt arbitration controlling and so on and so forth.
