River model is a main technology means and test device on the study of river course evolution process, estuary and river management, and river simulation. It is of important role on the experimental study of water conservancy, hydrology, and geology. Automatic measure and control of river model will play an important role for avoiding experiment error and developing experimental results.In this paper, an Automatic Control System of the river model from Xiao Langdi to Susi village--the first project of"the Model Yellow River"was designed according to the requirement of experimental measurement and control on River Model. The major study job and results are as follows:1. Analysis and simulation of tail water level control methods. A variable structure intelligent method composed by PID controller and parameter adaptive fuzzy PID controller is provided. A good control performance has been achieved by using this method.2. The automatic control on river model is realized by using industrial control Ethernet and embedded technology based on distributed control system (DCS). The Huanghe River Model Automatic Control System can automatically control the entrance flow, sediment concentration, tail valve and dam valve along channel of river model. The data of water lever, section topography, velocity of flow, and sediment concentration can be measured and processed automatically by this system. The automatic network system can provide strategy decision for river course management, reservoir utilization for"the Prototype Yellow River", and provide technological support for constructing and managing"the Digital Yellow River".
