Radome is one of the important parts in a radar system. In this paper, the electromagnetic characteristics of electrically large, complex radome are analyzed with the aid of CAD modeling and automatic meshing. Physical Optics(PO) is applied in analyzing the transmission characteristic of radomes, while Genetic Algorithm(GA) is used to optimize the configuration parameters. A theoretical model based on finite element method(FEM) is established to analyse electrically small radomes. Firstly, the theory of Genetic Algorithm(GA) is outlined, and some examples are presented to validate the correctness of GA codes. The reflection coefficient of stratified dielectric planar structures with uniaxial medium included is formulated. GA is employed in the optimization of reflection characteristic of this composite dielectric structure. The reflection coefficient of isotropic multi-layer media and that of the composite structure with one uniaxial medium layer included are optimized. Then, the curve fitting and automatic meshing are accomplished for radome configuration with the help of PATRAN software. PO is employed to calculate the transmission coefficients of electrically large radomes. The transmissivity is set as the fitness function in GA. The optimized structure of the radome is obtained through the GA iteration. Finally mathematical model for electrically small, complex radome analyses is formulated using Edge-based FEM. This theoretical model lays the foundation for the study of PO-FEM hybrid method to be fulfilled later on.
