With the development of network equipment, the embedded system which is based on communication processor and network processor is widely used. To research and master advanced design technology, we design a network communication platform using the PowerPC series CPU MPC8260 produced by Motorola. The platform can realize Ethernet communication, RS232 serial communication and ATM communication. Furthermore, there is much interface left for further research.MPC8260 is an advanced network communication processor. It is a 32 bit microprocessor integrated with a communication processor module and various network communication interfaces, so it has powerful capability on network communication, and it can be used to design high performance network equipments such as network switch and router. VxWorks operation system is widely used because of its high reliability, good real-time ability and easy to transplant. The network communication platform based on MPC8260 and VxWorks can significantly reduce the time-to-market development stages.The first chapter of the paper introduces the characters of MPC8260 and embedded operation stystem, also the whole design scheme is introduced. The second chapter introduces the design of external bus expansion and the internal registers. The third chapter introduces the design of communication interface. The forth chapter is primary on the transplant of the embedded operation system VxWorks. The last chapter emphasizes on the characteristic of the network system of VxWorks and introduces some program.
