With the development of communication industry, Network and communicationdevices'development passes through three phases: the hardware architecture based onGPP, ASIC/RISC, communication processor and network processor. To master themost advanced design technology, we design a network communication platformusing the advanced communication processor MPC8260 made by MOTOROLA. Theplatform has a great contribution to the research of network and communicationdevices.The MPC8260 is an advanced integrated communications processor designed forthe telecommunications and networking markets. By combining a high-speedembedded PowerPC core along with unparalleled integration of networking andcommunications peripherals, we can have an innovative, total system solution forbuilding high-end communications systems. The operation system which runs in theplatform is VxWorks which is the most widely used including high performancemicrokernel, networking support and friendly develop kit. The networkcommunication platform based on MPC8260 and VxWorks can significantly reducethe time-to-market development stages.We have completed the hardware design of the platform, which includes 64MSDRAM on 60X bus, 16M SDRAM on local bus and 8M Flash ROM. It also hasseveral communication ports, such as a 10/100M Ethernet, two RS232 serial ports anda 155Mbps ATM. We also have migrated VxWorks to our designed platformsuccessfully.This paper gives the presentation of hardware design including the design forreset, clock, especially for communication ports. It also explains how to migrateVxWorks to a special platform, including the modification of BSP and how to write anetwork driver.Many communication protocols and arithmetic can run in the platform. With theaid of this platform, we can easily develop many devices, such as Remote AccessServer, Regional Office Router, Cellular Base Station, Telecommunications SwitchController, T1/E1 to T3/E3 Bridger.
