In the background of fast development of city traffic system and explosion on the number of vehicles, the research and application of intelligent traffic system has raised more and more attention. However, current application of intelligent traffic system is focusing on centralized system, making some intrinsic problem not avoidable.In this article, we proposed a new concept of traffic information system based on ad-hoc wireless network. As part of the system, vehicles collect their own information, and exchange with other vehicles by specific designed protocol. At the same time, the information dissemination is done by the moving pattern of vehicles. As a result, a self organized, distributed traffic information system is organized, providing vehicles with traffic information ahead.The advantages of the new system comparing to centralized system includes, strong scalability, short information transmission delay, low cost on deployment and communication, target focused information dissemination, etc.To verify the new concept proposed in the system, we developed a complete simulator, with functions like road system configuration, vehicle behavior simulation, algorithm, protocol implementation and various traffic situation simulations. Criteria like front traffic coverage rate, obstacle coverage rate are calculated, and system optimization is also discussed based on simulation data.
